Configuring Synonyms for Search

Synonymns can be configured in 2 ways-

  1. Bi-direction (<=>)

    Treat all words in search term and synonyms as equal as one another, so that when you search for any of the words in the group it will also find any of the other words in the group. Example: You want to bring up as many "louis vuitton" products as possible, but there are a lot of different words used in the product name besides "louis vuitton", such as: "louis v" and "lv".⇒ In order to make the most out of a search result for these products, set up the bi-direction synonym for the word "louis vuitton" as the search term, and let "louis v"" and "lv" be the synonyms. When your customer search for "louis vuitton", it will also find "louis v" & "lv", and vice versa.

  2. Uni-direction (=>) Search for alternative words of a search term but the alternative terms are not synonyms of each other. Example: A search for "bottoms" will also find "shorts", "pants", "leggings". However, you wouldn't want "pants" showing up when someone does a search for "leggings" or "shorts", so a bi-direction synonym would not work for this situation.⇒ In this case, set up with uni-direction synonym, using "bottoms" as the search term while"shorts", "pants" and "leggings" are the synonyms.
